Looking for Alternative ADHD Treatments?

The rise of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the last few decades has been the cause of concern for researchers. Studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that more children are being diagnosed now than ever before, and the reason for this is largely unknown.

There are number of things that contribute to ADHD, such as behavioral, psychological, environmental, and genetic factors, but none of these has been proven to be the main cause.

While the treatment of ADHD has been mainly focused on medication, ADHD coaching, cognitive behavioral therapy for ADHD, and life management counseling, biofeedback has garnered a great deal of attention.

Biofeedback is a treatment of ADHD that uses electrical impulses to help retrain the brain to think positive thoughts. Many children with ADHD also suffer from negative self-perceptions, because ADHD makes it hard for them to focus in school, as it causes inattention, impulsive behavior, and restlessness.

With biofeedback, electrodes are connected a patient’s scalp, and he or she is seated in front of a computer screen. As thoughts flow through a patient’s brain, the electrodes stimulate images and sounds depending on the patient’s thought structure. For example, a positive, orderly string of thoughts generates pictures of a flower, or a sunny day, and negative ones may bring up a wilted flower, or other undesirable pictures.

ADHD alternative treatments have gained ground as more researchers and parents have become increasingly concerned about over-medication. Millions of children are put on ADHD medications every year, leaving some people questioning why doctors prescribe these medications so quickly.

While medication continues to be the main treatment for ADHD, biofeedback, herbal supplements, exercise, Ayurveda, wilderness programs, and other alternative treatments have given parents more options for their child. While none of these treatments are a cure for ADHD, a combination of them often do reduce ADHD symptoms significantly. For more, read this link.
