At the very least, people will experience one health problem in their lives. What can be problematic is that some people do not seek medical care or advice for their illnesses or disorders. Whether this is because of a lack of health insurance, a certain level of embarrassment, or because you aren’t certain that you can be helped, you should always try to seek medical help if there is something serious that is ailing you. Here are two common examples of illnesses or disorders that people typically do not get help for but should.
Mental illness
One of the most common health issues in the United States is mental illness. In fact, 80 million adults over the age of 18 live with an anxiety disorder, but many of them don’t get help. Additionally, more than three quarters of people who are depressed do not seek out medical help. This might be due in part to the fact that many people do not understand mental illness or do not think that they have it, but the consequences can be very serious.
Obesity
It is estimated that two thirds of adults in the United States are obese or overweight. Obesity can cause a plethora of health issues like some types of cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. One of the reasons that people do not seek help for their weight problem is that they think they have it under control or keep trying different diets and weight loss systems hoping that one will work. The problem is that some of these diets and weight loss systems are not healthy at all and promote dangerous eating behaviors. Weight loss physicians are trained to help people design a healthy and effective weight loss plan.
If you think that you suffer from either one of these health issues, you may want to make an appointment with your family doctor. Are you avoiding getting treatment for anything else? Let us know why in the comments. For more information, read this website.
