Most male pattern baldness, or Androgenetic Alopecia, is responsible for men’s hair loss. Recent data indicates that this actually accounts for over 95% of the cases. When men have reached 35 years of age, about 66% have some noticeable hair loss. Once men have turned 50, however, roughly 85% will have hair that has thinned significantly. Fortunately, hair specialists have available treatment options that can be performed in a hair clinic.
Follicular Unit Strip Surgery
One treatment option is Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS). This procedure entails surgically removing one or more strips of scalp that still contain hair. These strips are then placed in balding areas where incisions have been made. It’s important to note that because this is an invasive procedure, it can present with a higher complication rate. In addition to leaving scars, it may prove to be challenging to have future grafts harvested. This is due to scarring as well as issues associated with pulling further on the scalp. There is also a longer recovery period with FUSS than with other types of procedures.
Follicular Unit Extraction
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), or follicular transfer (FT), is a less-invasive option. Basically, natural hair groupings of one to four hairs are extracted using a small punch. In some cases, there may be as many as seven to eight of these hair grouping in a single graft. This procedure tends to last about eight hours. While it does depend on an individual’s skin type, the hair grafts will usually take in a few days and the redness will only last about an average of four to five days.
FUE is minimally invasive and doesn’t present with the same complication rate as FUSS. Furthermore, it doesn’t leave large scars behind. In the future, individuals that have had this procedure may opt for shaving their head or keeping it their hair short.
